"Where you now stand is a result of thoughts and feelings that you have offered before, but where you are going is a result of your perspective of where you now stand."

The Power of your Posse

Written by

We've all heard the statement "You are the company that you keep." I think my mother may have said this to me growing up when she did not want me hanging out with friends she did not approve of (oh the good ole days!).

So much have been written, with respect to the impact of the company we keep. The people we choose to spend the majority of our time with have a huge influence on who we will be and what we will accomplish in our life. Tony Robbins says; "Who you spend time with is who you become! Change your life by consciously choosing to surround yourself with people with higher standards!"

Yes, some people are easier to avoid than others, as there are times when these people are close to us and is very difficult to avoid. As cliché as this may sound, it is at those times that prayer serves as a great tool. If the difficult person is a family member; pray for them. If it's a boss that you must deal with everyday; pray for him or her. If it's an important client that is critical to your business growth and success; pray for them. I truly believe that every prayer is answered. It may come in the form of the person becoming more positive and easier to get along with, or simply be that we change our perception of the situation and see it differently.

Having a strong and supportive community is a great way to help us live the best version of ourselves. Support Community is one of the 3 keys that Master Life Coach Mark Fournier writes about in his cherished program Life Mastery - A Course of Action. We need the support of a community in order to accomplish our goals. No one has ever accomplished anything great on their own. People along the way directly helped them achieve their goals or indirectly. It is important to surround yourself with people who are able to help you maintain a positive perspective, support you and truly wish for you to succeed.

I personally have made changes in the past, when I saw myself being pulled down by people around me. It was a situation where luckily I could quickly remove myself from; however, it was still a tough decision to leave and one that had associated cost to it. When I reviewed and took inventory of the negative impact it had on me; which affected my interaction with my family, it was at that point that I could no longer tolerate the negative energy. My sense of well-being and positive outlook was worth more to me, and both Tony Robbins and Mark Fournier would say, my future success and quality of life depended on the energy of those I chose to surround myself with.

Having mentors in another great way to add to the power of your posse. This is especially important for business and career development. I love connecting with others, especially those in positions that I aspire to. It is important to learn from these people. Unfortunately, many times we allow ourselves to be influenced by those who are controlled by their fears. We take advice from those that are struggling in areas where we wish to thrive. It is important to re-examine those that we take advice from. Do they have the type of life you want? Do they have missions and values you respect?

Take inventory of those that you choose to associate yourself with and see if they fuel your energy or drain it. Start to eliminate those that are draining your energy and fill yourself with those who uplift you!
